ABOUT
NAP+N
The National Association of People
living with HIV/AIDS (NAPN) was established
after the first national consultation of PLWHAs
in 2003. This historic event, succeeded in
bringing 30 PLHA participants from across
the country to agree to one common goal: to
unite all those living with the virus in Nepal
and fight back.
NAPN has focused on building the capacity
of local PLHA groups to respond appropriately
to the needs of PLHAs in area of advocacy,
care and support, counselling, raising community
awareness, providing information and education
and improving access to the healthcare and
legal services. NAPN is the largest network
of grassroots organizations working on the
frontlines of this epidemic.
NAPN is committed towards the promotion of
autonomy and empowerment of PLHAs which will
help them make informed decision. NAPN ensures
that PLHAs are in the forefront of policy
making debates and their meaningful involvement
at all levels is essential. The network is
working towards multi sectored collaboration
and aims to develop strong working partnership
with non governmental organizations, the government
and the private sector.
Currently
there are over 120 organizations affiliated
to NAPN and has estimated 7000 members. NAPN
currently has 5 regional offices in Dharan
(Eastern Region), Chitwan (Central Region),
Pokhara (Western Region) and Nepalgunj (Mid
Western Region) and Dhangadi (Far Western
region). NAPN has its central secretariat
in Maharjgunj, Chakrapath, Kathmandu.
NAPN is currently implementing the Challenge
Fund that supports 40 CBOs in 40 districts
under DFID/UNDP and 18 PLHA CBOs in 6 districts
through GFATM grants. NAPN also works on network
strengthening by providing assistance to 5
regional offices and the central Secretariat
with the support from FHI/ASHA project. NAPN
works towards increasing the capacity of PLHAs
in Sexual and Reproductive Health rights in
3 district namely Chitwan, Sunsari and Kathamndu
in partnership with FPAN supported by IPPF.
Empowerment of PLHA in Far western Region
has recently started with 6 PLHA CBOs in Doti,
Kailali and Kanchanpur supported by Elton
John AIDS Foundation. A “Safe Passage”
project is currently in the pipeline to support
30 PLHA women groups in Kailali, Doti and
Dadeldhura districts in partnership with Care
Nepal supported by European Union. UNICEF
is supporting a pilot project that aims to
advocate for issues of HIV infected and affected
children. NAPN also receives technical support
from WHO and volunteers from VSO.
NAPN is registered with the district administrative
office and affiliated with the social welfare
council of Nepal.
During this four years NAP+N has expanded
its network to bring the grass root level
organization in one umbrella, approaching
the different mobilization for its members,
also by exposing PLHAs in the society for
positive prevention and capacity building
of the grass root level organizations.
Target
Groups:
All people of Nepal Living with HIV and AIDS(PLHA)
are the main target groups of NAP+N. Beside
that high risk groups are also our target
for positive prevention.
• Injecting drug users (IDUs),
• Female Sex Workers, (FSW),
• Male Sex with Male (MSM – Sexual
minorities),
• Client of Sex worker (CSW), and
• Seasonal Labor Migrants (SLM),
